Eclecticism

7
Investigating eclecticism theory and therapy some psychologists consider eclecticism “neither theoretical orientation nor therapy”. This point of view is rather ungrounded. Doctor of Psychology John M. Grohol affirms that eclecticism is important (Grohol, 2004). With the help of an ordinary eclectic approach in therapy, a person is examined from the point of view of psychodynamic perspective. In this case, the use of more active interventions is available. Eclecticism is not messy and confused, it is reasonable, many-sided and multipronged (Integrative Psychotherapy, 2012).
In order to understand the reason of a psychological disease a doctor examines the patient from different sides. First of all he tries to understand the reason of the patient’s unhealthy behavior, it is behaviorism. It is also very important to know the problems of unhealthy thoughts, it is cognitive side. And, at last, it is a humanistic approach when the doctor tries to investigate the interaction of unhealthy thoughts and behavior as the reason of the patient’s psychological disease. According to such an example, eclecticism without any doubts is very important to the field of psychology when the doctor investigates the psychological problem from different points of view (Grohol, 2004).
The statement that staying with one school of therapy is not quite effective is not right. Eclecticism is rather flexible and appropriate for modern society. According to the eclecticism, there are different ways of approaching of various psychological problems of patients; a therapist may play a role of a teacher or a guide in this case, or can combine all these roles. Eclecticism theory uses different ways, methods and techniques from all schools of therapy. That is why it is rather effective (Grohol, 2004).
To draw the conclusion, it is necessary to admit that eclecticism is very important, effective and appropriate way of psychological therapy. It does not exclude ordinary methods of treatment; however, it is more flexible and reasonable. Not all psychologists consider it the best one, but it helps to view an individual from psychodynamic perspective which is very important and necessary for the future treatment of a patient.
